Clerk vs Firebase Auth: which auth provider for a modern SaaS?

Reviewed by SaaSpark editorialLast verified Jun 11, 2026

TL;DR. Clerk has the polished UI components — drop-in
`<SignIn />` and `<UserButton />` that look great with zero CSS work.
Firebase Auth has unmatched scale, every identity provider you'd want,
and is essentially free under 50K MAU.

Developer experience

Clerk's React/Next.js SDKs are the cleanest in the space — sign-in, sign-up,
org switching, user profile all ship as ready components. Firebase Auth gives
you the primitives (`signInWithPopup`, `onAuthStateChanged`) and lets you
build the UI.

Pricing

Clerk: free up to 10K MAU then $0.02/MAU. Firebase Auth: free up to 50K MAU,
then $0.0055/MAU. At scale, Firebase is cheaper. Clerk's price reflects the
UI work it saves you.

Verdict

Speed-to-ship matters more than per-user cost → Clerk. Cost-sensitive,
large user base, or you already use Firebase → Firebase Auth.
